AS9120B-Aligned vs. ISO 9001 Certified: What Aerospace Buyers Should Actually Check in a Supplier

Procurement teams in aerospace and defence are trained to look for certification logos on a supplier's website — AS9120B, ISO 9001, and similar marks are treated as a shorthand for trustworthiness. That instinct is reasonable, but it misses an important distinction: a distributor can run quality processes fully aligned with a standard's requirements without holding the formal third-party certification, and the certification itself doesn't guarantee the thing that actually protects your supply chain — traceability.

Certified vs. Aligned — Why the Difference Matters

Formal certification (AS9120B, ISO 9001:2015) means an accredited external body has audited a company's documented quality management system against the standard's requirements and issued a certificate. Process alignment means a company has built its internal procedures — sourcing, handling, storage, dispatch, documentation — to meet the same requirements, without having gone through (or yet completed) that external audit and certification cycle.

For a distributor, both can result in the same practical outcome for a buyer: products sourced from authorized channels, full batch traceability, and complete documentation on every shipment. The certification is a credential about the company's audited process; it is not, by itself, a guarantee about any individual product's origin or quality — that comes from traceability and documentation, which you should verify independently either way.

What to Actually Verify Before You Order

  • Source verification — is the product coming from an OEM manufacturer or an authorized distributor with a documented chain of custody, or from an unverified reseller?
  • Documentation completeness — Certificate of Analysis (COA), Technical Data Sheet (TDS), and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) should be provided as standard with every shipment, not on request
  • Batch and lot traceability — can the supplier trace a specific unit back to its manufacturing batch if a quality issue surfaces later?
  • Storage and handling practices — are products stored per manufacturer specification (temperature, humidity, shelf-life rotation), especially for chemicals and shelf-life-limited items?
  • Regulatory alignment for your sector — DGCA material requirements for Indian aviation MRO, EASA/FAA references for export work, and defence-specific standards where applicable

A Practical Qualification Checklist

  • Ask for a sample COA/TDS/SDS set before placing your first order, not after
  • Confirm whether the supplier is an authorized distributor for the specific brand you're sourcing, and ask for documentation of that authorization
  • Check whether the supplier's quality process is certified or aligned, and weigh that against the traceability and documentation they can actually produce
  • For aerospace-specific supply, confirm the supplier understands and can reference the applicable OEM specifications (BMS, AMS, MIL-SPEC) for the parts you need
